Computer File Management Advice & Assistance

My Philosophy

    In this modern age, our lives are so centered around digital devices and structures, that we can no longer afford not to understand how they work. With that in mind, I started Jazmyn’s Digital Housekeeping with the belief that you shouldn’t have to call upon the company's IT department to help organize your files.

    I started in the corporate world, and I’m excited to bring my tech know-how to help small office and home office users. I believe computers are supposed to be easy to work with, and I can take the fear and confusion away from your computing experience.

    Digital Housekeeping, like cleaning your home or office, is not a one-time proposition. Marie Kondo would agree - it is an ongoing effort, and it requires vigilance and patience. The more you do it the better and more comfortable you will become with it. I want to make sure your comfort level rises beyond “good enough!”

Desktop DYSFUNCTION

I also call it, "Icon Mahjongg."

Do you have "piles of files,"

all stacked up on top of each other on the desktop?

You can't find files quickly, and this slows down the computer--to say nothing of getting in the way of your own productivity!

EMAIL EXASPERATION

One address for work;

One for family;

One for online orders;

One you've had since the 90's....

Does your "unread messages" count have a comma in it?

Are important messages ending up as SPAM, with junk mail front and center in your inbox?

Cloud CONFUSION

We can store our files in so many "clouds," these days: iCloud, OneDrive, Google, Dropbox, Photobucket, Flickr...

the list goes on.

If you're in the cloud, do you know how much storage you are using, or do you not think about it until you get the

"Cloud Almost Full" warning?

file-sharing frustration

Ever try to send a large file via email, only to get an error--or worse, have it clog up your outbox?

Ever receive a file and have no idea how to view it?

Want to share photo albums with loved ones, but you're afraid you'll send the wrong pictures, or that they'll go to the wrong recipients?

Most Common Issues

  • Why should I even bother to change how my files are organized? I have a system that works for me!
    If you can find everything you’re looking for with minimal effort, good. But if you have coworkers or family who need to access your files when you’re not available to bring them up, working within a standardized file structure will make life that much easier for them. Say you’re on vacation, and a colleague needs to open a document you created. Do you really want them bothering you on your time away, because they haven’t mastered your “system?”
  • Is it, “File Explorer,” or “Finder?” I’ve heard it both ways.
    You are probably working or living in an environment with multiple computers, running Microsoft Windows, as well as Apple’s Macintosh Operating System (macOS). File Explorer, previously known as Windows Explorer, is the method Windows uses to keep the files organized, going back to Windows 95. Finder, the default file manager on all Macs, has been included on Apple computers going back to the first Mac in 1984. Both methods use icons, folders, and a cursor-driven graphical user interface (GUI) to help move things around. They work essentially the same way, with only a few cosmetic differences.
  • Can you free up space on my computer?
    Most of the time, the work we do together has that specific purpose in mind. We can get things cleaned up, as long as your hard drive is large enough to function properly with the essential system files– otherwise, we’ll need to discuss a new hard drive, or even a new computer altogether. Barring that, I can help you come up with a method for keeping your other files on external drives; in the “cloud;” or in a combination of those methods. For more on Cloud-based file storage, scroll down to that question.
  • I’m having trouble finding files on my iPhone (or Android). Do you cover mobile devices?
    Yes! Apple’s iOS, which runs iPhones; and its cousin iPadOS, on iPads, have made great improvements in file management over the years. Likewise, each new version of Android keeps getting better for file placement. Some Androids even allow upgrading of their internal storage, on an SD Card; so if we need to go that route, I would be happy to help explore those options.
  • My computer is running slow. Will “Digital Housekeeping” speed it up?
    Like any machine, a computer has only so many years of faithful service built in. I would endeavor to rule out aging or malfunctioning hardware, first. If we can rule those factors out, I’m optimistic that a good “spruce up” will help get it running like new!
  • Can you help me move to the Cloud, or use Cloud Services more effectively?
    Absolutely. Over the last several years, Cloud services like Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Apple iCloud have become household names for computer users. There are many ways to make best use of these services; and I can help you copy or move your essential files to whichever service you have–or as some people like to do, we can even use multiple Clouds simultaneously. It’s a big sky!
  • My company needs Digital Asset Management. Do you offer that service?
    I do. If all your files are already in a digital format, I can help get them organized so that everyone in your company can find and work with them most efficiently. Digital Assets–be they video, audio, images, or text documents– are the lifeblood of a company, and it’s my job to keep that lifeblood flowing smoothly!
  • What about Adobe Assets?
    Specific developers like Adobe and BlackMagic; or even the fixtures like Apple and Microsoft, each has their own preferred workflows and conventions. Sometimes, the methods used by one company directly contradict how another brand works. I pride myself on my ability to adapt to each of those quirks, so transitioning from one program to another won’t interfere with our momentum at all.
  • My computer is too slow/old/broken to run Zoom. Can we still have a session together?
    If you can’t run Zoom, I am still able and happy to have a conversation over the phone to discuss how things got that way. But at the end of the day, you need a working computer. If you can’t run Zoom, I expect it’s not able to do most of what you need, efficiently. We can discuss emergency methods to get things in good enough order to make Zoom work–even if that means a new computer outright. Hopefully it won’t come to that; but if it’s time, I’ll help you plan out that transition as smoothly as possible.
  • I had a loved one pass away, and I need to get to their files.
    If you’re locked out of their computer, we can discuss strategies to access those critical files. Just understand that some file protection and encryption methods are specifically designed to keep out third parties–even if that third party is a family member. If your loved one has passed, you have my condolences; but we may be limited as to what we can get. If they’re still around, but you’re beginning to have those difficult conversations, I can help you put together a plan to access everything you’ll need, when needed.
  • What is an FAQ section?
    An FAQ section can be used to quickly answer common questions about you or your business, such as “Where do you ship to?”, “What are your opening hours?” or “How can I book a service?” It’s a great way to help people navigate your site and can even boost your site’s SEO.

Frequently Asked Questions

How this Works

  1. We have an initial consultation phone call, so you can tell me what you'd like help with. Over the phone, we outline a basic plan of action for your computer files and overall digital life.

  2. Next, we set up a Zoom session where you share your screen with me, and we walk through the steps of the plan together. You can ask me all the questions you have, while I teach you tricks and tips on how to manage the files, tame the cloud, or find the missing items. We also write out a custom step-by-step plan that you can follow at your own pace. Sometimes, I’ll assign “homework” between sessions.

  3. We can then set up follow-up sessions as needed, to help you keep up with your goals—or if you feel like you’ll need a friendly nudge.

We work together not only to put your files where you can easily access them; but to make sure you’re so confident in your computer’s file organization system, that eventually you won’t even need me on a regular basis to keep things tidy

Jazmyn is incredible! She is a real computer housekeeping "geek!" So far she has helped me create my own website at an incredible price, put files in the correct place in my computer, clean out old files in my computer, ensure I have enough digital space both on the computer and in the cloud, organize thousands of photos, scan and organize photos for family albums and create a movie to share with my family at a recent family reunion. Jazmyn also has shown me how to use my time wisely. She "shares" the computer during our time together on zoom so that I can see what she is doing and she also leaves me with notes during our sessions so that when she is not there, I can easily remember how to proceed. I am so impressed with her ability to make the complications of computer use easy using common sense. She also made sure my files are correctly backed up. I also like the fact that Jazmyn isn't afraid to research something she is not familiar with. I would highly recommend Digital Housekeeping!!!
